Hemingway

ca. 1920s?

This is my favorite photograph of Ernest Hemingway. If you happen to know the origin of this photograph, please let me know. I read The Old Man and the Sea several years ago and was left confused and unsatisfied. I came across a pile of used books with the tattered copy on campus just before graduating and read it again. Vast difference. Below are a few select quotes by the writer. I fully mean to pair these with his submachine-gun-toting and bermuda-shorts-wearing swagger.

"Courage is grace under pressure."

I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after.

Forget your personal tragedy. We are all bitched from the start and you especially have to be hurt like hell before you can write seriously. But when you get the damned hurt use it—don’t cheat with it. Be as faithful to it as a scientist—but don’t think anything is of any importance because it happens to you or anyone belonging to you.

"Man is not made for defeat.  A man can be destroyed but not defeated."

All cowardice comes from not loving, and not loving well.
